Meet Archie, a super cute 3-year-old schnauzer. He’s an adorable handful with many attributes that make him a delightful fella.
He’s super fun and funny; a bit of a clown. He has to be king of his castle so no other dogs, please. He’s a lot of miniature schnauzer at 30 lbs., so his new owners need to be ready. Need an example of how you need to be ready? He loves to run and leap into the lap of his person, with no awareness of your personal space. He doesn’t care; he just wants to be close to you. He’s a professional playing machine and car-rider. Chew bones, puzzles, plush squeaky toys, and balls that he chases and then he will want you to chase him while he plays keep-away!!!!! He will play by himself, too! Tossing toys into the air and running around. So cute!
He’s super smart and he loves to snuggle and gives kisses. This guy is food- and attention-motivated, which will be hugely helpful in his continued training. Although he’s learned a lot, he will benefit from additional teaching. He really needs it to become the schnauzer he was meant to be. So far, his training has included basic obedience, impulse control (sit, stay, take it during feedings) and ignore other dogs on (a big challenge for this boy) He knows no, sit, stay, off/down, leave it and take it. He is house trained and leash and crate trained. He’s received an extensive assessment from a trainer that his foster mom will share with the adopter.
He must have a fenced back yard to help him use some of his flibbertigibbet energy.
He has a BIG personality and he gets excited, but his foster mom has learned he can calm quickly when given the right cues. He can get overwhelmed and as much as he loves attention, he will give subtle cues that he has had enough and needs some peaceful space.
As you can probably tell, Archie still has a lot to learn about trusting his people – he’s not an alpha; he is just uncertain and gets scared. He’s going to need some time to learn he is safe in his new home. And lots of love and patience. His foster mom is one of our most experienced and has great success with Archie! His trainer says he can get where we want him to be – to a place where he is his best schnauzer self - more relaxed and less reactive. His foster mom has lots of tips and guidance for his new family. He’s had an ear infection that his foster mom watched closely and he’s now good to go; he also has some typically itchy schnauzer skin that fish oil and salmon food help.
The bottom line is Archie was not socialized as a puppy or young dog and was not given the attention he needed. Despite that, he is a loving schnauzer with lots of loyalty and enthusiasm. His life did not start the way we would have wished, and because of that, he needs training and loving consistency. Of course, Archie has had all his vaccinations, and has been neutered. He’s so ready for his forever family – all he needs is just the right home. One that understands his needs and will help him with training and attention.
