Brownie2
If you are interested in Brownie, please complete an online application first. Once you have had a phone interview, you may contact foster mom, Michelle, for more information at mmccror1@gmail.com.

Brownie is a six year old male that came to SLR as an owner surrender being fostered in Knoxville, TN. He is neutered, heart worm negative, and up to date on shots and heart worm and flea preventative. He weighs around 20 lbs and is liver and cream colored. Brownie has juvenile cataracts and neurological issues and through the rescue has been able to see both an ophthalmologist and a neurologist and have his teeth cleaned.

Brownie9aIt is believed that Brownie has had his cataracts since birth and because of this, he is not a candidate for surgery. His vision may be limited, but he has adapted very well and has great hearing! Brownie also has some neurological issues that cause him to have nystagmus (uncontrolled eye movements) and walk/run in circles when anxious. He had blood work, a chest x-ray, an MRI, and a spinal tap performed which all came back normal and it is believed that his neurological issues are due to a traumatic event from his puppy years. There is no sign at this time that his neurological symptoms will progress any further.

Brownie came to his foster home with little training, but things have improved dramatically. He is mostly house-trained and does okay if he is given enough time outside to do his business. During the day, he does wear a belly band as he tends to mark. He walks well on a leash, sometimes making big circles around his person and a harness is preferred. He growls and barks at other dogs and people walking by, but will calm down if the people come up and greet him. He does need more work in this area, but is very treat motivated.

Brownie can be anxious because of his limited vision and his reaction first reaction is to bark at anything unknown. He needs someone that will give him time and patience to show them what a truly amazing and sweet boy he is and work with him more on this. Once he realizes he is safe, he turns into a cuddle-bug and just wants his belly rubbed. He has lots of energy and loves to play fetch. He is fine around cats and has done well visiting homes with other dogs. Brownie's perfect home is one where he can be the only dog with no smaller children. Previous schnauzer experience is preferred.

We do believe that Brownie has had a rough past, but thanks to SLR we know he will have a wonderful future.BrownieC
